What makes a resume ATS-friendly?
Five things: (1) single-column layout (no tables, no side panels); (2) standard section headers ('Work Experience', not 'My Journey'); (3) text-based PDF or DOCX (not image-PDFs from Canva); (4) standard fonts (Arial, Calibri, Roboto); (5) JD-aligned keywords using literal matches, not synonyms.
How do I know if my resume is ATS-friendly?

Is a Canva resume ATS-friendly?
Usually no. Canva often exports text as images, which ATS can't read at all. Even when it exports clean text, the templates use two-column layouts and graphic elements (skill bars, icons) that ATS parsers struggle with. Our checker will confirm for your specific file.
Is a Word resume ATS-friendly?
Word .DOCX is one of the most ATS-friendly formats — but only if you use a single-column, standard-header template. Fancy Word templates with text boxes, tables, or columns will still fail. We have ATS-friendly templates you can use.
What font is ATS-friendly?
Arial, Calibri, Times New Roman, Roboto, Helvetica. These are the safest. Avoid decorative fonts (Brush Script, Pacifico), thin/light weights (Helvetica Light below 10pt), and condensed fonts.
What format is ATS-friendly — PDF or DOCX?
Text-based PDF and DOCX are both ATS-friendly. Image-PDFs (from Canva, scanned resumes, screenshot exports) are not. If you're unsure whether your PDF is text-based, try opening it and selecting your name — if you can copy-paste it, it's text-based.
How many pages should an ATS-friendly resume be?
Page length isn't an ATS factor — ATS reads everything you submit. Recruiter preference is 1 page for <5 years experience, 2 pages for senior. ATS-friendliness is about formatting and parsing, not length.
Can I have a photo on an ATS-friendly resume?
Region-specific. US/UK/Canada/Australia: no photo — it triggers bias-protection rules and some ATS will reject. India/Europe/Gulf: photos are conventional. Either way, never put critical info (name, contact) over the photo — ATS can't read it.
Should I include icons or graphics?
No. ATS can't read images. A skill bar showing 'JavaScript 5/5' is invisible — the system sees nothing. Use text only: 'JavaScript' in your Skills section.
What section headers are ATS-friendly?
Use the standard dictionary: Work Experience, Education, Skills, Projects, Certifications, Awards, Publications, Languages. Avoid creative names like 'My Journey', 'Professional Arsenal', or 'What I Bring'.
How do I make my existing resume ATS-friendly without rebuilding?
