What are ATS keywords?
ATS keywords are the specific words and phrases recruiters search for in their Applicant Tracking System to find qualified candidates. They include hard skills (Python, Kubernetes), tools (Jira, Salesforce), certifications (PMP, AWS SA), soft skills (stakeholder management), and qualifiers (5+ years, Agile, SaaS).
How are ATS keywords different from regular keywords?
ATS keywords are matched literally, not semantically. 'Kubernetes' and 'K8s' are different. 'Project Management Professional' and 'PMP' are different. Regular SEO keywords use synonyms; ATS keywords don't. Our checker surfaces the exact phrases recruiters search for.
How many keywords should my resume have?
Most JDs have 15-25 distinct keywords. Aim to match at least 80% for the keyword score component of your ATS rank. Stuffing more than the JD asks for can actually hurt — the system flags unnatural density.
Where should I place ATS keywords?
Three places, weighted differently by most ATS: (1) Skills section — highest weight, list every relevant skill. (2) Work Experience bullets — context-rich, second weight. (3) Summary/Profile — third weight but lowers irrelevance penalties.
Can I just stuff keywords into my resume?
No — and don't try. Modern ATS detects keyword stuffing (unnatural density, irrelevant repetition). Plus, your resume eventually reaches a human who reads it. Use keywords in context with quantified achievements.
