Subcritical: water boils, mixed water-steam at <221 bar. Supercritical (SC): >221 bar, 540°C+ - no boiling, single-phase, ~40% efficiency. Ultra-supercritical (USC): 240+ bar, 600°C+ - 42-45% efficiency, lower CO2 emissions. NTPC has 800 MW supercritical units at Mouda, Solapur. USC reduces coal consumption per unit generated.

Hydroelectric: water flow drives turbines. Renewable, low operating cost, peaking capability, but capex-heavy and location-specific. Thermal: combustion of coal/gas/oil heats water -> steam -> turbine. Higher CO2 emissions, fuel-dependent operating cost, baseload capability. NTPC has both: 70 GW thermal, 5 GW hydro under SJVN/THDC.

NTPC formed NTPC Green Energy Limited (NGEL) for renewable focus. Targets: 60 GW renewable by 2032 (from current ~3.5 GW).
